In my journalism class, we watched the webinar Video Storytelling Without Reporter Narration through the Poynter Institute. The lecture was given by Darren Durlach (The Boston Globe) and focused on the understanding and impact of natural sound. Through natural sound, the viewer feels more of a fly on the wall rather than someone narrating the story.
Durlach stressed the "questions write the story." This was particularly interesting to me because I am trying to constantly improve my interviewing techniques. Durlach said to try to find someone to say the nut graf of the story, which summarizes the essence of the story and why the story matters.
When covering a story on scene a way to get people to tell you what is going on is to just plain ask them. Go to the nearest person and ask, "what just happened" In the examples Durlach gave, some people just plainly said what happened, but others gave great quotes filled with emotion and personality that enriched the story.
I am excited to be on scene for an event to capture moments like this; I feel more prepared by this lecture. Also, to stayed focused on the efficiency and impact of the story. This is important for me to remember because I find people so interesting that I want to tell all aspects of their story and keep all their incredible quotes in, but I have to stick to the focus to create the best impact to the viewers.
