Al-Jazeera, literally meaning "the island" referring to the Arab peninsula, is a online and television news based in the Middle East. The international site has quickly become one of my favorite “go-to” sites to read to get information. Before this semester, I had never heard of this site, but it is now bookmarked on my Internet tabs. One reason I enjoy reading Al-Jazeera is the unbiased (for the most part) news.
A good example of this is Al-Jazeera's article Egypt bars US-based civil society groups. They started the article by stating what the issue was and provided a few quotes supporting their content. The quotes were of confusion of why the organizations would not be allowed in Egypt. The article then moved on to the background of the situation, showing research and providing the readers with the full story. The article ended with a possible reasoning for the organizations to not be allowed in Egypt, yet implying the fight was not over and there may be more to the story.
I really appreciated Al-Jazeera providing the full story background in the article. Too many people read a short excerpt from of a story and formulate an opinion on solely that. I try to know as much about the issue before I formulate an opinion on the subject. At times, I do get caught up in the hype of a topic and go into the text with a bias, but I am working on reducing that.
